July 11 - Kitty Hawk

Today we went from Durham to Kitty Hawk...Not taking the most direct route as usual...Apparently the Spot Tracker didnt connect until we got about half way.
Last Week Laura took me to a BBQ place in Raleigh where the chef was challenged to a BBQ throwdown by Food Network Chef Bobby Flay....and the local won. This is my rack of ribs...
Now that I think about it I wonder who got the leftovers???
Lisa was supposed to pay half of the dinner (It Was my Fathers Day Present.)..But Laura said she hadn't received any money yet...

We really didn't have any idea there is this much swamp in North Carolina

More Swamp

The pics below are at the Wright Memorial in Kitty Hawk
Unbeliveable as it may seem...this is an accurate size replica of the wind tunnel the Wright Brothers used to analyze various wing shapes to find the most efficient.

Various wing shapes tested in the above wind tunnel

The Monument at the top of the hill is where the brothers made many of their over 1000 glider flights over 3 years, learning how to design and use control mechanisms

The Shop, and cabin they lived in and used during the fall and winter when they first flew the motorized plane
The markers marking the distance of the first 4 flights from level take off with motorized propulsion...the furthest was 800 plus feet and almost a minute

The rail in the left forground was the rail they used to take off. They used rail as the sand was too soft to support wheels or another method.
Looking down from the top of the mill they glided from

One last jump in the Atlantic

Melissa...This one's for you.
Thats all for today
