June 30 - Dragon And Blue Ridge Parkway - Asheville

Got the shirt to prove it!
Today we rode the Tail of the Dragon Rt 129 on the border of NC and Tenn.

Afterwards we headed up to Cherokee NC and rode for a while on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and stopped in Asheville NC for the evening
The Dragon is the route to the left on the above shot


A sample of what the gps showed on the way back out of the dragon. There is a rock slide on the Tennessee side, so it is not a through route right now.

So you get 318 curves on the way in

and 1 U turn in the middle

I think that adds up to 637 Curves in 22 Miles

Back home the Gas Pumps are Black and the Diesel is the Green Handle...this one was backwards.

And before you beat me up for buying BP gas...I had been on my warning light blinking for quite a while, and we both could hear the banjo's playing.


I have been trying to avoid the BP stations on this trip, in support of the gulf state folks.



There were a lot of great roads today, and we enjoyed all of it.

Were well over 3000 miles so far.

    I wanna ride the Dragon and his tail. You buy gas where you can, and reading is a great skill. I know one has to be careful at the pump; every state seems different. I do love the look on your face-and the shirt! Sounds like a good ride. Viva!

Fargo to Bismark Bismark to Glendive MT We did about 400 miles today our longest day so far. Landscape just leaving Fargo There was a detour on the route to the freeway onramp. Apparently in ND Detours expect you to have an all terrain motorcycle. There were several mudholes, and we slid around a bit but staid clean Later we saw this wind turban blade on a truck entering the freeway and passed it later on. You have no idea how big these are until your right next to them I think North Dakota has almost as much "Big Sky" as Montana A Metal Mural of a flight of geese Think the wind affected the growth of this tree? Durham - Topsail

We woke up this morning to the sound of thunder, I went down to the breakfast in the hotel lobby, and after watching the weather report (Thunderstorms in the Durham area, and along our route toward Wilmington, I figured for sure we would get wet, so the rain cover went on the luggage, and the camera was packed away so we didnt take many pictures again today, although about half way the clouds lifted and Doris got out the camera and took a few. We started seeing Tobacco fields today (i think) a first for us. We saw several but mixed in with lots of Corn and other crops. We have been told that Kudzu, a non native viney plant is taking over a lot of the wild areas in the south. We saw a lot in Georgia, I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but it looks like it to us. You can see it climbing in to this tree in the picture. We got to Topsail about 12:30, and just relaxed for the afternoon, Jumped in the Atlantic for the first time just before dinner. Let me tell you that it is much

July 14 - Gettysburg

Well we had a fun time on the Beltway leaving DC...You can see the SPOT dots...These are 10 minutes apart.....and cover about a mile each...Oh yeah...It started drizzling. We didnt put our rain gear on as it was only a light drizzle, and not cold. We hadn't counted on being in first gear for a hour. Wet again ...oh well. But once we got to 270 and headed north to Gettysburg the rain stopped, and we eventually started to dry out. At Gettysburg we decided to take a bus tour, something we normally don't do, but in this case I think for a first timer, it is the only way to get oriented. The actual battlefield covers more than 20 square miles. This is the only monument to both sides in the battle in the whole area. It has an eternal flame at the top. The stone for the Base came from Maine and the spire from Alabama (unless I got it backwards) Each of the states whose soldiers fought in the battle, have a State Monument...This is Virginia, with Robert E. Lee mounted on his horse.
